According to several news sources, the White woman who falsely accused Black teenager Emmett Till of making sexual advances toward her has passed away. Till was brutally assaulted and dead by the woman's then-husband. The Calcasieu Parish Coroner's Office confirmed Carolyn Bryant Donham's death on Tuesday as she was receiving hospice care in Westlake, Louisiana, as reported by The New York Times, the Associated Press, and Mississippi Today. Donham, a 21-year-old shopkeeper in Money, Mississippi at the time of Till's died, said that the youngster had grabbed and attempted to sexually assault her while they were both in the store on August 24, 1955. Till, a native of Chicago, was in the area to spend time with relatives. The teen was taken from the home of a relative in the middle of the night some days after the accusations were made, assaulted severely, and then hanged. Three days later, his mangled body was pulled from the Tallahatchie River; he had been weighed down by a metal fan that had been tied around his neck with barbed wire. In September of that year, Roy Bryant, Donham's then-husband, and J.W. Milam, Bryant's half-brother, stood trial for Till's death. After about an hour of deliberation, an all-White, all-male jury found the two not guilty of death. However, once they were no longer in danger of being prosecuted, they revealed their guilt in an interview with Look magazine published in 1956. Images published in the media depicting Till's dismembered remains during his funeral in Chicago sparked outrage across the United States and around the world. The lynching of this man and the subsequent acquittal of his killers sparked a nationwide civil rights movement. It was reported in 2007 that Donham had changed her story slightly. #carolynbrynt She allegedly maintained that Till never touched her or made sexual overtures toward her in an interview with historian Timothy B. Wilson, author of The Blood of Emmett Till, and she reiterated similar assertions in an interview in 2017. The Associated Press got Donham's 109-page unpublished memoir, I Am More Than A Wolf Whistle, in July 2022, and in it, she reiterated her claims. She insisted, however, that she did her best to prevent her husband from harming Till.I told my husband Roy, 'He's not the one,' to keep him safe. I assure you, that is not who he is. She begged her son-in-law to "please take him home" in a manuscript they wrote together. Donham argues in her sealed memoir that she, like Till, "paid dearly with an altered life" as a result of his murder and lynching.In August 2022, a grand jury decided not to indict Donham on capture and death charges related to Till's death, claiming a lack of evidence. Reportedly the last living witness to Emmet's capturing, Rev. Wheeler Parker, Jr. declared the jury's finding "unfortunate, but predictable," as reported by the Associated Press at the time.
